There was a conference call with the man himself, which you can listen to here, in which a few people ask McCann a few questions. DOB from the AJC posted a few quotes from this conference call in this article yesterday. Here are a few quotes from that article:

“You don’t play the game for awards,” McCann said, “but it still makes it nice to know you ended the season on a positive note and everybody noticed the numbers that you put up.

…

“If you had told me that [three years ago], I wouldn’t have believed you,” he said. “I put a lot of hard work into getting my swing where I wanted it. Now I’m working on my defense, trying to make myself a better all-around baseball player.”

Don’t you just want to hug him?

To view the rest of the Silver Slugger Award winners, go view the official press release. It’s very surprising that Chipper didn’t snag one, after winning the Batting Title, but David Wright did have a solid year at 3B.

Secondly, there are a lot of rumors starting to surface involving the Braves, which is a good thing. Lately, all we’ve heard about is this blasted Jake Peavy mess that just won’t end was all but put to rest today by Frank Wren. It’s about time we start hearing other rumors about other possibilities to try to offset the frustration most Braves fans now have toward the Padres, which hopefully will subdue now that we’re clearly moving on. I’m not going to post all of the rumors on here, but I do try to keep up with them all, mostly on MLB Trade Rumors and the MLB Hot Stove Blog. Those are two good sources for rumors and such things to keep you busy during this long off season.

Also, the top prospect that we’re absolutely not trading for any reason, Tommy Hanson, has been lighting up the AFL or should I say mowing down? Either way, he’s doing extremely well, as is his teammate Tyler Flowers. Normally, I don’t mention a lot about minor leaguers on here, but I’ll make an exception this time. To check out Tommy Hanson’s stats and possible prediction of his Major League debut, please head on over to CrookedPitch.com. This is a very good read on a future projected pitching star.

Finally, I mentioned before that I had something in the works and that I wasn’t going to talk about it. But, since it’s going slowly right now, so I figured I might as well at least mention it. What I’m currently working on is a new home for Catcher’s Blog, only the name is different. I won’t reveal too much yet, but when I get the layout ready, I’ll put a preview up. The reason for this transistion to a new domain is that I’m 21 now and I’m wanting to bring a more personal side and be more “girly” to the blogosphere, if you will. Please take the word girly really lightly, because I really am not a girly girl by any means. I like being a girl and being somewhat feminine, but being “high fashion” and what not just isn’t me. Plus, I’d like to establish a name for myself as a Braves blogger, well more so than I already have anyway. So keep looking out for new updates on the new domain. I hope to have it up and running by December or around there, but I’m not sure when I’ll actually launch it. I’ll have to think about it some more and then there’s finishing up college as well.

Ok, so I’ll be a nice blogger and send my congrats to the Phillies for winning the World Series and bringing us into the off season earlier than expected. Ok, there (even if it is a week late).

Now that I’ve gotten that out of the way, I will go on to say that the off season has officially begun. About this time last year (earlier actually), we traded Edgar Renteria for Jair Jurrjens and Gorkys Hernandez. Now it’s looking as if it was a genius move by Frank Wren since Renteria had a less than stellar season in ‘08 and the Tigers are declining his ‘09 option for $11 million. Hopefully we have more brilliant trades like this one from Frank Wren in the near future.

There are a lot of trade rumors starting to surface and MLBTR has posted their 2009 Top 50 Free Agents list. This list mentions three free-agent possibilities for the Braves. Below are the names and MLBTR reasons for matching the player with the Braves, followed by my comments in bold.

Ben Sheets - Braves. Under this scenario, the Braves are unable to land Jake Peavy via trade. Sheets is one of many possible free agent pitchers the Braves may consider. The Red Sox or Dodgers could be other suitors.
- I could see this happening, I’ve read in different places that Sheets could land in Atlanta. The only problem I see with this is that Sheets is somewhat injury-prone, which might not be a good combination.

Raul Ibanez - Braves. Even after bringing in two starters, they’ll have money left over for left field.
- I’m not sure what to think about this since I’m not too familiar with Ibanez. Here’s his baseball-reference.com stats.

John Smoltz - Braves. I see no reason Smoltz would leave after all these years.
- This is agreed 100% if Smoltz is able to make a return.

Not too much to mention other than free agents filing and a lot of speculation so far. The GM Meetings kicked off today and will go through Thursday. A new Mailbag was posted on the official site with a few good points.

Also, speaking of free agents, you could win tickets to an Opening Day 2009 game by playing Free Agent Frenzy, which is basically fans guessing where free agents will end up next season. The contest runs until November 12th. I made my guesses, you should, too, while nothing else is going on in the world of Hot Stove.

I would just like to say that I started writing this article about two weeks ago, I didn’t want to rush finishing it just to get it posted. I also had other things to worry about than to work on this article, but I finally found time to finish it between working on schoolwork. Also, this article was started before all of the Jake Peavy rumors surfaced, so this article does not mention any of that at all.
—————————————
There’s a (somewhat) newly written article that was posted on the Braves official site a few weeks ago about Prado possibly becoming an everyday player, with other people, such as Chipper Jones, backing the idea as well. I believe that Prado could possibly be a useful player if he played more, but I’m not sure that he would be as valuable as he currently is if he did play at one position on an everyday basis. While I do favor KJ over Prado, this perception of mine isn’t based on favoritism. This is just my opinion, do with it what you will. Below I will review each of the players’ positives and negatives and compare the two of them with each other.

I understand completely that KJ could be a solid foundation in a trade package for quality pitching for next season and beyond. I know that we really do need and could really use good and lots of good pitching, but while KJ isn’t a natural second baseman, he is proving that he could possibly be one of the better hitting second baseman in the game. Even if he does end up with another team in 2009, he’ll be providing that team with a lot of upside.

KJ’s Positives & Negatives:

Being selective is one of KJ’s many positives, but sometimes his downfall is being too selective when at bat. Being too patient led to his strikeouts adding up during the season (coming out at 113), until he started becoming somewhat “more aggressive” at the plate. KJ has a total of 305 SO in two and half seasons, but he does have 171 walks. Below are comparisons to a few of his current teammates.

Jeff Francoeur - 430 SO/115 BB
Yunel Escobar - 160 SO/68 BB (with 154 games, 525 AB less)
Brian McCann - 218 SO/151 BB

KJ is projected to be a power hitter and projected to hit around 20+ homers per season, but has yet to reach that feat in his young career. In ‘07, he hit 16 homers, but in ‘08 his HR total dropped to 12. Hopefully he’ll get better in this department as he gains more experience.

Another asset that KJ has on his side is decent speed. In two and half seasons, he’s stolen a total of 22 bases. He’s not going to steal a lot of bases, but stealing bases isn’t always everything. KJ is more of a power guy than a speed guy anyway. His speed on the base paths, though, is where he comes in handy, especially scoring from first.

KJ could probably be one of the better all around 2B in the league if he worked on his defense, which he’s supposedly doing this off season (after he gets back from Italy, of course). Over the past two seasons, KJ has a fielding percentage at 2B of .979. Now really that’s not that great, but hopefully he can improve that number as he gets more experience at the position. KJ did make a lot less errors toward the end of the season, when he was on his monster tear at the plate in September. I don’t think that he’ll ever be gold-glove caliber, though you never can tell, but hopefully he’ll become somewhat decent-to-average over the course of his career, if he stays at 2B.

KJ makes it no secret that he can be his own worst enemy at times; he wants to succeed so much that he puts pressure on himself and has to do well. He’s stated that he started to relax a bit toward the latter months of the season, plus mixed a bit of “aggression” into his swing and it seemed to work for him. KJ can think too much and when he does, it becomes a bad thing, usually resulting in striking out, sometimes in key situations.

One of KJ’s other major downfalls is that he can be an extremely streaky hitter. It’s like he stated previously, he had two great months and four mediocre ones. When he finds his groove at the plate, which hopefully he’s slowly getting a grasp of, he’ll become more consistent with more experience. This is, after all, only his second season playing a long, 162-game season.

Being an arbitration-eligible player for the first time, KJ could see his salary raise to around $2 million or more. This makes some people feel that the Braves are looking to trade him to let the cheaper Prado take over. I do not think that is the case, though, as the Braves decided to keep Matt Diaz last year when he was somewhat expendable with the amount of outfielders that could have been used this past season in his place, for example. KJ will still be a lot cheaper and more of a bargain than most of the other 2B around the NL.

KJ did beat out Prado, and other candidates as well, for the 2B job before the 2007 season and he could do so again if having to compete for it. I’m not sure that he will have to, though, if he’s not traded.

Now moving on to Prado. I watched nearly every game this past season and when Prado played, he didn’t really impress me too much defensively; his offense, on the other hand, was a lot better, especially after he came back from injury and was filling in for regulars.

The 2008 season was his first full season on the Braves roster, and he did miss some time due to a thumb injury from sliding head-first into 1B, but he did manage to play a total of 78 games. It’s a small sample size to compare to KJ because Prado only played 17 games at 2B this past season, while KJ played a total of 144 games. Prado played more games at 3B (24), playing for Chipper when he was out of the lineup for whatever reason. Prado also filled in at 1B for 17 games for Casey Kotchman when he was with his ailing mother. But since Prado did end up with a .320 BA and can be used as a super utility player, he too, could find himself playing for another team in 2009.

Prado’s Positives & Negatives:

Prado’s BA has climbed over the past three years as he’s become a more permanent fixture on the Braves 25-man roster, more or less outgrowing the minors and making a small name for himself to become a major utility guy. It’s a small sample size to try to figure out if Prado’s average will continue to stay around .320, or even .300 for that matter, or if it will be in the mid-to-upper .200’s.

So far, he’s played several different positions, ranging from 1B to LF, which brings me to my next point. Prado can play just about any position on the field, with a few exceptions, of course. Bobby put Prado wherever there was an empty spot on the field just about to have his bat in the lineup, especially toward the end of the season, which proved his versatility when someone had to be out for whatever reason.

Prado doesn’t have a lot of power, but he will hit balls into gaps and to the warning track to net him a good bit of doubles and a few triples. He might hit a few homers here and there, but he probably won’t hit more than five+ in a season.

Prado gets on base well, having a .377 OBP in ‘08, which averages out to .363 over three seasons. He’ll walk at a good rate, but he also will have his strikeouts as well.

His defense isn’t the best in the world. All fans have seen that Prado probably won’t ever be a Gold Glove winner, as I’ve mentioned previously for KJ as well, but I would say, even though they both are not very good at defense, KJ probably has the upper hand on Prado at 2B. Prado’s fielding percentage came out at .967 in ‘08, but his overall fielding percentage at 2B is .962 with 14 errors. KJ and Prado are pretty close defensively at 2B, and both are not that great at it.

Prado isn’t that fast when it comes to stealing bases, he’s stolen a total of three while being in the majors, but he runs somewhat decent on the base paths. He may or may not score from first on a decent hit; it depends on where the ball is hit, the ballpark and its field conditions, etc. to determine this. He is relatively average with speed, but isn’t the fastest guy on the team.

Prado will be making a lot less than KJ will in 2009, so the question is, will the Braves want to take on his cheaper salary instead of keeping KJ with his arbitration eligibility? It’s a thought, but I don’t believe they will trade KJ just to have the cheaper salary in Prado at 2B for the next few seasons.

In conclusion, it is clear that one of either KJ or Prado will be playing 2B in 2009. The question is, who will it be? If Prado continues to hit like he did toward the end of season, he may just prove to be the man for an everyday job somewhere. But where? Well, that’s up to certain circumstances (if KJ is traded or not) and up to Bobby Cox. I do believe that if KJ is still a Brave next season, he will keep his 2B job without question. KJ is the better of the two players overall, maybe not by a lot, but he is, at least in my opinion.

This means that Catcher’s Blog and anything associated with it will not be accessible during that time. I’m not sure exactly when the site will be down, but the e-mail I received said between the hours of 12 am to 6 am of Thursday, the 23rd. This probably won’t effect many visitors, but in case you might happen to try to access the site during those hours on the 23rd and the site is down, then that is why. This is just a heads up for everyone. Everything should be back to normal after the upgrading process is completed.

I’ve been following the Jake Peavy rumors all week since they broke and I haven’t really posted anything about them on here. The main reason is because right now they’re just speculation and who knows what might happen with this situation. Everyone is saying that the Braves are indeed the front runners in this, but who knows what other teams have to offer? I’m sure there will be plenty more of this topic mentioned within the coming weeks, as the trade could be completed with the right offer most anytime now, or so the rumors say.

I was sent an e-mail from the host of Baseball Daily Digest, Eric SanInocencio. He mentions that FOX Sports Writer, Ken Rosenthal, was on the show today to discuss the whole Jake Peavy situation and what could possibly go down within the next few weeks. Rosenthal believes, as does many other writers, that the Braves are the front runners for Peavy’s services. Rosenthal talks a good bit about Peavy and possible scenarios. Check out the show.

In other news, I’m still working on a write-up that will hopefully be done soon. Be on the lookout for that post.

Last off season, I did a series on the Braves’ roster and what our options at each position were before the season started. This year I’m thinking about doing the same thing, only not quite to the same extent because it took way too long to do last time. I won’t start this probably until January or around there, but there’s a fanpost on TalkingChop about where we stand so far. It’s pretty detailed payroll-wise and it’s sorted pretty well by each facet of the team, so have a look if you wish. It’s a very nice read and a good reference as well.

Another off season-speculation read is on MLBTR, which is an abbreviated version of the newly-posted Braves Mailbag, and discusses options for the Braves “big bat” on the off season checklist for next season. If you wish to read the whole Braves Mailbag on the official site, feel free to do so here. MLBTR throws out a few names mentioned by Braves beat writer, Mark Bowman, in which the Braves might be seeking services from. My take on this is that the Braves do not want to overpay an outfielder just to play here for a year or so and are looking to trade for the power-hitting outfielder that they need to bolster the lineup in 2009 without having to fork over a lot of money while doing so. Who will it be? I would say an Adam Dunn-type player or around that equivalent; someone who’s not too old and isn’t declining and someone who hits for power with consistency. Mark Bowman named, specifically, Xavier Nady that would probably be the better option. We’ll have to see, though. Still a while to go before the season starts and even a few weeks before teams even start gearing up for the Hot Stove League.

DOB’s latest blog addresses the upcoming off season needs as well. He mentions a few names as well that the Braves might have some interest in or might even take a look at at the very least, some of which are not mentioned in the Mailbag, but are definitely worth a look or two.

According to MLBTR, the Braves have mentioned that the payroll will increase in ‘09 and the team will have roughly around $45 million to spend this off season with that amount coming off the books. Most of the money freed up looks to be going toward starting pitching, as it should after this season of injury-ridden pitchers falling off one-by-one. Some names mentioned as possibilities for the rotation next year are as follows: Derek Lowe, A.J. Burnett, Matt Cain, Brad Penny, and Ryan Dempster. All of these are better than the fill-ins we used this past season, but some of those guys could possibly be re-signed to their respective teams. The Braves would also like to try to re-sign Smoltz, Glavine, and Hampton. I don’t see them signing all three, though, unless their contracts were incentive-based or decreased a bit (mainly Hampton for the latter).

I started back college classes today, trying to attempt to wind it down now with only four more classes to go (one left after the current quarter), so posting might be a little slower. Of course, I could post at school should anything huge happen. But the main point here, I’m working on something new. I won’t say what it is yet because I still have a lot to do on it before it’s ready, but look out for this revelation sometime within the next few months. I’m pretty excited about it myself.

I’m sorry for the lack of updates lately, I just haven’t really been motivated to post anything. Maybe I’ll do better with the supposedly-busy, upcoming off season. Let’s hope so. When the Braves release info about FanFest, which will hopefully be released soon, I’ll be sure to post it. Hope everyone has a good weekened!

MLBTR has posted their 2009 Offseason Outlook on the Braves. While it’s not too in depth, it does cover the basics and the needs we will be looking to fill this off season. It’s kind of like stepping into Frank Wren’s shoes for a moment and looking toward next season’s possibilities.

I agree with most of his assumptions and outlooks. One thing I do not agree on is trading KJ. Why would they trade him after two seasons? He’s picked up the last part of this season and his defense has improved a lot. KJ would be the better than Infante and Prado at 2B, plus they need utility roles on the bench. If one of those two are playing 2B everyday, they can’t play elsewhere, which, in my opinion, is where they excel. Infante has cooled off from playing everyday at different positions and Prado has cooled off slightly. Infante has a career SLG% of .391 after seven seasons and Prado has a .434 SLG% in three seasons. Still KJ comes out on top with a .440 SLG% and I think he could do even more than that; his power numbers have been down slightly this year. Still, I don’t see them getting rid of KJ yet. He’s still only 26, 27 next year, and he looks to have a lot of upside and potential to offer still. I would at least give him another year to see what he has to bring to the table. I know that I have a biased opinion on KJ, but I’m trying to be unbiased on this assumption. And as DOB has stated, there are too many other holes to fill on this team, why would we make another one that would need filling?

Also, I don’t think we should trade Frenchy after one bad season. The past two seasons he’s done rather well, so hopefully he’s learned not to bulk up like he did for this season. I think he knows now that that was a bad idea and that next year needs to be 100% better. He still has knack for swinging at bad balls, but he has cut down on that at least some by attempting to be more patient at the plate.

We really don’t know what Frank Wren is going to do in what looks to be an active off season. Let’s hope he does his job well and fills the holes that are in need of plugging for next season.

First off, something that my friend directed to my attention, the 2009 Projected Roster from SoxProspects.com. See image below.

Jumping the gun much? I know the Red Sox were one of the teams trying to acquire Ohman at the deadline, but seriously, that’s kind of wishful thinking to me. He’s a free agent and who knows? There’s a slight possibility the Braves still might re-sign him. I’m not saying we will, because he will be demanding a lot, but who’s to say Boston will be the team to sign him if he does venture into free agency? I just thought it was kind of overreaching, but then again, it is a fansite after all.

This got me thinking about next season, and while this season isn’t over yet, it kind of is in a way. Moving on, I thought it would be kind of cool to kind of predict how the roster will look next season. Of course, I’m biased on some of the players, who could blame me, but I will do my best not to be biased on most of them. I will state my opinions on them and what not, though. This will be written later on, though.

I’m venturing to the last game at The Ted on Sunday to see the Braves take on the Mets. Let’s hope it’s a good outcome and I will make a review post with pictures sometime next week. Look out for it.

My mom and I left going to Columbus, GA at around 12:15 pm to get my sister at her apartment. We got my sister and left around 1:30 pm or so on our way to Atlanta. Once in Atlanta, we headed to some transmission place to pick up my brother’s transmission that took almost an hour and wasn’t supposed to. We almost didn’t even find the place to begin with. By the time we left this place headed to Turner Field, it was around 4:40 pm or so, thus making us miss the Braves batting practice because of traffic. Once we got there we parked in the blue lot and walked a short distance to the field. We went in and did a few things before going to our seats, which were in section 121, row 4. To give you an idea of where we sat, please view this picture that was taken by Patcave on flickr.com at the game that I just found last weekend. I thought it was pretty neat, lol. I was in the middle and my mom and sister were on either side; my mom was to my right and my sister was to my left.

Anyway, moving on. When we arrived, the Marlins were in the middle of their batting practice, so we watched them until they finished and readied the field for the game.

We got a BP ball from Matt Linstrom, who was in right field somewhere in those pictures. He proceeded to ask “where’s the southern hospitality?” so we then said please, lol. We almost got Scott Olsen to autograph it since he was almost standing right beside us while chatting with a security guy, but the players went in before we could.

After the Marlins exited the field, we waited a little while before the Braves players started emerging onto the field. Of course, Mac was the first one, much to my delight. ;D Then the starting pitcher, Charlie Morton, made his way out to warm-up. Other players made their way onto the field not too long after to stretch and warm-up. Right before the game started, some “little league” teams were honored and got to get autographs from the starting players.

The game started at 7:10 pm and it was Parrothead night. Here are some from the game itself:

- The man himself and greatest manager in the game, Bobby Cox.

- The best hitting catcher in the game right now with 23 home runs, Mac.

- Florida’s hot right fielder, Jeremy Hermida: picture 1, picture 2.

- I had a perfect view of KJ all night and here the better pictures that I got of him: picture 1, picture 2, picture 3.

- We had them 4-2, so we brought in Gonzo to finish it: picture 1, picture 2, picture 3.

When the game ended, we headed out to the buses where the players would be getting on to go to the airport to head off to Washington. We waited about twenty minutes for the players to come out to get on the buses. When everyone finally did come out, we got a few autographs and I snapped a few pictures in the process; my sister got the autographs since she was in the front behind the railing.

- Our first autograph was of Acosta, but I wasn’t able to get a picture of him.

- Next it was Campillo that signed.

- The starter, Charlie, signed autographs for a few people, but we didn’t get his autograph.

- Next was Blanco, but again we didn’t get his autograph.

- The next autograph we got was of Frenchy. He always signs for people and is so nice to his fans.

- Next was the reincarnated Mike Hampton. We didn’t get his autograph, though.

- Next was Mac, who is always sooo nice with his fans. Mac signed more than anyone else did and made sure after someone dropped a ball that he signed it for them. picture 1, picture 2, picture 3, picture 4.

- Last, but certainly not least, was Smoltzie and the rest of the stragglers to come out (Bobby, Chipper, and Ohman were three of the main guys that I remember). They couldn’t sign because of the bus having to leave and apologized, but I believe Chipper did sign for one or two people.

- We also got autographs from Blaine Boyer and Buddy Carlyle, but got no pictures of them. The autographs we got: picture 1, picture 2. I know some are hard to make out, I can’t really help that, though, lol.

We left for home after this and thus concludes the trip to Atlanta. It was a far better game than the previous one we went to against the Brewers on June 25th, personally. Not the game itself, but the experience. Better seats, better view of the field, and not nearly as hot. The record in games that I’ve attended is now up to 4 out of 5 wins, which is just cool.

Sorry for the lack of posts everyone. Again, I’ve been lazy or busy doing school-related things. Or there’s also the fact that we can’t win a game now it seems. But other than that, I will post my game review of the 28th game vs. the Marlins probably tomorrow or Wednesday. It’s not as in-depth as some of the past reviews I’ve written, but it works. I also got a few autographs and pictures after the game before they left for Washington, and that’s in the post as well.

I don’t usually post site updates on blogs, but since I’m posting, I might as well include that I revamped the layout a little bit. Not much, but I did make another header and changed a few of the colors up a bit. I really love how the header came out, with its abstract feel. I will admit that I sort of followed a tutorial for some of it, but still. The picture of Mac is actually a picture I took at the game on the 28th. I added that to give it more depth and a more Catcher’s Blog feel. He adds more to the graphic.

Another note while I’m posting randomly in the middle of the night, I will be going to last home game on September 21st against the Mets. We’ll be sitting in section 117, row 8; I purchased the tickets this past weekend. It’s never too early for a good deal on tickets. Seriously, StubHub is like one of the best places to buy Braves tickets.

So today is a much-needed off day for our struggling Braves. I’m not sure that having an off day will do much of anything, but what could it hurt? Like the Braves play lately, I’ve been lazy and unenthusiastic about posting, mainly because I didn’t really want to focus on how bad things have become. So I won’t. I’ll make this a “good” post.

TalkingChop has been covering the September call-ups and with September just a few days away, I thought I’d link to those good posts. It’s a three-part series with hitters, pitchers, and roster fitting, but it’s a good read. Something to take your mind off the sting of the terrible games lately. Part one, part two, part three.

Also, I wanted to mention that I’ll be venturing to Atlanta to Thursday’s game against the Marlins. Hopefully it won’t be as bad as I’m thinking. The Marlins are off their game a bit lately and Charlie Morton is pitching against Anibal Sanchez. Hopefully this will be one of his good days. *crosses fingers* Anyway, I’ll be making a post this weekend on the game with pictures. Be on the lookout for that.
