Glavine returns to Braves
Leah | November 19, 2007 | 10:43 amEveryone can breathe a somewhat sigh of relief now that we’ve signed Glavine to a one-year deal to bolster the rotation. Now even if Hammy is still unable to pitch for whatever reason, we have someone to fall back on that has veteran experience. Hopefully this won’t be the case, but just in case, it won’t be so much of blow like last season. Now we have even more pitchers than we know what to do with, but that’s a good thing considering the rotation last season. I’m sure some of those pitchers will be dealt in a deal for a center fielder or something to get us another piece this off season.
But I think one reason Glavine was willing to take a hometown discount was to be able to spend more time with his wife and kids, which he’ll have plenty of opportunity to do now. Glavine and the Braves agreed on a one-year, $8 million dollar deal with no options, incentives, or buyouts. Apparently he intends to hang ‘em up after this season. There will be a press conference to officially announce the deal, with Glavine attending, this afternoon at 2:30 pm.
It seems the Braves weren’t the only ones to have interest in Glavine, as the Phillies and Nationals, among other teams, were indeed interested in him. But of course, he let the Braves have first dibs to offer him anything. Smart move, Tom.
I will probably add more to this post later on today after the press conference depending on how much more the deal is talked about it, but we’ll see.
